Cedars-Sinai Genetic Counselor I in Los Angeles, California

The Genetic Counselor will provide cancer genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in a variety of clinical locations in support of Cedars-Sinai Cancer. This role is hybrid and averages 3 days per week remote and 2 days per week in person.

What will you be doing:

  • Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled.

  • Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost.

  • Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork.

  • Interacts and communicates regularly with the medical geneticist(s).

  • Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist.

  • May provide case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling.

  • Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support.

  • Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients.

  • Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary.

  • Provides genetic counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care, e.g., compliance with GDB/AFP Program regulations. Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field.

  • Masters Degree in Genetic Counseling.

  • ABGC eligible or certified (or equivalent). Expected to obtain ABGC/ABMG certification.


  • Open to new graduates with zero to two (0-2) years experience in genetic counseling.

  • Ability to work independently. Demonstrates refined analytic and diagnostic reasoning skills. Ability to clearly explain complex medical information in both verbal and written form.

  • Demonstrates organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Computer experience preferred. Bilingual skills a plus.
