What's this role all about?

Under the general direction of leadership, the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and/or another designee, the Radiation Protection Tech is responsible for technical aspects required to carry out the enforcement of State and Federal regulations governing the use of hazardous and radioactive materials. This includes radiation instrument calibration, radiation surveys, use of radiation detection and measurement equipment, sealed source wipes, hazardous materials, pickup, triage, processing, sample preparation, documentation, inventory, radioactive waste handling, emergency Hazmat and spill response, record keeping and research assistance. Must be able to work with a minimal amount of supervision and is authorized to make independent judgment within the scope of delegated authority and actions. This role will also assist the RSO in radiation safety training, Radiation Safety committees, Institutional Review Board protocols and other duties assigned by the RSO.

Education:

  • Minimum Assoc. Degree/College Diploma in Physics, Medical Physics, Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Engineering or other related field

  • Preferred Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Medical Physics, Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Engineering or other related field

License:

  • 40 Hour OSHA HAZWOPER Certification preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum 6 months Experience handling hazardous and radioactive materials and/or x-ray machine compliance testing. Preferred, 2 years.

Physical Demands:

  • Lifting, Carrying, Pushing and Pulling up to 50 lbs. Frequent walking, reaching, hearing and repetitive motions.
