4SE is integrated within the General Medical-Surgical Service and Departments of Medicine and Oncology/Hospice to provide quality care to medical patients who are acutely ill with a spectrum of diagnoses related to HIV/AIDS, as well as other medical diagnoses such as: pneumonia, r/o tuberculosis, sepsis, sickle cell anemia, cancer and palliative care.

There is a special focus on pain management, medications, self-care, nutrition, and education. 4SE staff provides special procedures including chemotherapy administration and monitoring, pain management, metabolic support, patient and caregiver education and support, and palliative care. Respiratory isolation services are provided to those patients requiring ‘airborne precautions’. Patients who require a higher level of care are transferred either to a cardiac monitoring unit or to an intensive care unit (ICU).

As a Registered Nurse IV:

  • You are an expert clinician who demonstrates a high level of knowledge and expertise in a specialty as well as general nursing.

  • You consistently demonstrate excellence in all areas of nursing practice including nursing care delivery, staff education, research, and collaboration.

  • You manage complex, unpredictable patient care situations and are a nursing leader.

  • You serve as a resource to the nursing staff, the unit, the organization, and the community to promote the advancement of nursing.

  • You apply clinical knowledge regarding standard of care to consolidate interventions for time and cost savings.

  • You demonstrate knowledge of regulatory requirements in patient assignment making delegations of tasks, documentation and oversee care for the delivery team.

  • You demonstrate a dedication of customer service and an ability to meet the needs and expectations of patients and health care colleagues. You demonstrate leadership through initiative, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.

  • You assume the responsibility and accountability for the supervision and application of the nursing process throughout the delivery of patient care

  • Coordinates shift operations; Assigns and monitors meal periods, rest breaks, and tardiness on a shift by shift basis; When in charge, oversees and authorizes incidental overtime; Provides assistance to co-workers, new staff, temporary staff and students.

  • Delegates and assigns tasks to licensed and unlicensed health care workers within the scope of their job responsibilities

  • Coaches and supports nursing staff in the application of advanced clinical skills and critical thinking to support patient care activities

  • Evaluates, facilitates and promotes patient flow, Coordinates discharge planning and team rounding as applicable.

  • Assumes responsibility for mentoring, coaching and staff development, acts as change champion; Contributes to performance evaluations.

  • Champions department improvement activities.

  • Demonstrates leadership and/or actively participates and supports one or more of the following activities areas: Shared Governance-Chair, MD/RN Collaborative-Chair, Preceptor, Mentor, TCAB, Committee, Project, participation in community service activities or other related.

  • Participates in the completion of required skill and competencies

  • Assists with strategic planning; Participates in activities related to recruitment and retention

  • Performs skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy and the initiation of peripheral venous access

  • Evaluates and works to improve the process of patient care delivery within the unit and service centers

  • Demonstrates advanced assessment skills, integrating appropriate data sources to assess the signs, symptoms, reactions, behaviors, or general appearance to determine normal versus abnormal characteristics

  • Demonstrates expert knowledge and provides comprehensive direct and indirect care to the specific populations needs, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, education, family and condition needs

  • Identifies and assesses patient safety concerns with respect to age and developmental considerations. Intervenes to provide a safe environment and evaluates effectiveness of intervention for patient

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements:

  • BSN or higher from an accredited school of nursing

  • Full command (verbal and written) of the English language

  • Working knowledge of applicable Standards of Practice

  • Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of health care technology within the specialty area

Licenses/Certifications:

  • California State RN License required

  • BCLS approved by the American Heart Association required

  • Specialty Certification required, ONS Oncology Certified Preferred.

Experience:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Minimum of 5 years acute RN experience including 3 years experience in specialty area preferred

  • Meets specialty specific clinical competencies for assigned area

  • Demonstrates dedication to customer service and an ability to meet the needs and expectations of patients and healthcare colleagues.

  • Has maintained satisfactory Clinical Nurse III status for a minimum of one (1) year

  • Meets clinical criteria and protocol of Clinical Nurse IV
