Are you a hardworking and dedicated research professional? Principal Investigator, Edwin Posadas, PhD, is looking for a Research Associate II (RA II) to join the team!

Dr. Posadas is a medical oncologist and physician scientist in the Division of Hematology Oncology of the Department of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC). He has both clinical and research interests in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer and the biology of cancer metastasis, leading to a unique laboratory research environment that covers basic, translational, and clinical research. Working under direct supervision, the RA II performs routine and increasingly complex laboratory tasks, procedures and develops technical command in one or more relevant areas. Participate in research activities involving all aspects of the research process, such as investigation, technical, testing/validation of results, and report findings. Perform a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of laboratory research projects. Observe and align with safety standards and procedures, assist in preparation of data for publication and/or presentation at scholarly meetings, and assist in general laboratory continuity. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Additional Job Duties:

  • Will assume primary responsibility for organization and collection of blood and tissue biospecimens as well as inventory for these items using a REDCap Database. The RA II will be a primary point of contact for the clinical team and the basic investigators who will be utilizing the biospecimens. The RA II will have opportunities to improve existing and/or develop new systems to streamline the biobanking responsibilities.

  • Will have primary duty for organizing collection of planned biospecimens for the research laboratory from phlebotomy areas, operating rooms, interventional radiology, and the mailing dock (for shipped biospecimens)

  • Storage and inventory of all biospecimens entering the laboratory

  • Oversees retrieval, distribution, and recording of all biospecimens exiting the laboratory

  • Performs a variety of increasingly complex blood and tissue processing protocols and procedures and assist in the design of new complex or unusual protocols and techniques to optimize biospecimen quality for downstream molecular studies including RNA, DNA, and protein profiling as well as cellular studies of morphology and motility.

  • Keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments and results and assist in identifying and troubleshooting of unexpected results.

  • Assists RA III with ordering laboratory supplies and supports laboratory operations.

  • Assists RA III with maintenance of lab equipment and related records

  • Assists in the operation of specialized equipment, as required by the area of research.

  • Assists in preparation of data for publication and/or presentation at scholarly meetings.

  • Observes and complies with safety standards and procedures.

  • Assits RA III with orientation of research laboratory assistants or lower level research associates and undergraduate student researchers on day-to-day lab operations and routine procedures.

  • Performs lab cleaning and maintenance duties, including washing and sterilization of glassware, operation of autoclaves and other specialized equipment

  • May assist in performance of experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of one or more laboratory research projects in a specific area of research.

  • May be trained on-the-job in basic benchwork under close supervision of PI or other designated laboratory supervisor.

Educational Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science biological science or similar field required. Masters in biotechnology/biology or similar preferred. Certificate or Coursework in blood and tissue processing for pathologic analysis preferred

Experience and Skillset:

  • At least two (2) years of experience in laboratory or related research experience required

  • One (1) year of experience with blood and tissue processing required

  • Must have familiarity with databasing software. REDCap preferred

  • Experience with receiving clinical specimens and designing inventory systems.

  • Must be able to separate blood into PBMCs and plasma

  • Familiar with routine laboratory procedures, experimental protocols, and overall lab organization.

  • Must have superior interpersonal, communication and organization skills and the ability to work across company disciplines and functional units, and computer application experience.

  • Familiar and able to process tissue samples for storage in OCT that will be usable for RNA/DNA extraction

  • Must possess computer skills to include, but not limited to, Excel and Word. Ability to simultaneously manage multiple clerical trials, and attention to details.
