The Sutterwala and Cassel Laboratory is a lab led jointly by Fayyaz Sutterwala, MD, PhD, director of the Infectious Diseases Division, and Suzanne Cassel, MD, associate professor in Pulmonary and Critical Care. The focus of studies in the Sutterwala and Cassel Lab is a family of cytosolic molecules called nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat containing receptors (NLRs) that are involved in the regulation of innate immune responses and cell death pathways. Under general guidance, the Research Associate II (RA II) works closely with PI, providing technical and/or administrative support. Will participate in research activities including investigation, validation of results, and reporting of findings. In addition to research activities, the RA II will be primarily responsible for managing a mouse colony. May develop hypotheses and assist in planning steps for the investigative process. May be co-author or author of publications and make independent presentations. May perform the duties of the Research Associate I and must have a thorough understanding of laboratory and research functions. Will supervise and train other Research Laboratory Assistants and Research Associates. Not responsible for generating grant funds.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • With minimal supervision, Research Associate II is required to manage a colony of genetically modified mice.

  • Performs animal genotyping, develop strategies for efficient breeding of different mouse genotypes.

  • Performs a variety of experimental protocols and procedures based on standard molecular biology protocols

  • Assists other lab members with experiments involving mice

  • Monitors and ensures compliance with safety standards and procedures.

  • Keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments and results.

  • Manages day-to-day activities of lab including ordering of supplies and monitoring inventory to ensure efficient functioning.

  • Orients new lab members to the day-to-day operations and laboratory procedures.

Department Specific Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and maintain lab mouse colony with appropriate documentation, write and maintain animal protocols, and liaise between the lab and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Comparative Medicine staff.

  • Implement and maintain laboratory guidelines and standard operating procedures.

  • Ensure supply inventory is adequate and act as primary resource for purchasing, managing vendor relationships.

  • Train and supervise research assistants and post-docs and coordinate their involvement in daily lab tasks and research projects.

  • Orient and train all personnel on lab safety, conduct, standards, and technical and administrative practices.

  • Perform and analyze in vivo and in vitro experiments.

  • Serve as lab emergency contact, and enforce compliance with safety and lab procedures among all lab personnel.

  • Attend and participate in regular laboratory meetings.

Educational Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in biological sciences, required. Master's degree, preferred.

Experience and Skillset:

  • Two years of relevant laboratory experience, required.

  • Experience in managing a mouse colony is strongly preferred, including the tracking of the colony using a database. Requires strong attention to detail.

  • Experience in standard molecular biology techniques including DNA isolation, PCR, qPCR.

  • Experience with handling mice is required.

  • Understanding of mouse colony management is required, and experience managing a mouse colony is strongly preferred.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent organization skills and very detail-oriented; learns new tasks quickly; self-motivated; works well independently with minimal supervision; works well with others, and able to multitask.

  • Knowledge of human resource and administration policies and procedures.

  • Must possess computer skills to include, but not limited to, Excel and Word.
