Cedars-Sinai Research Associate III - Bioinformatics in Los Angeles, California

The Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is seeking a Research Associate III to join the labs of Drs. Simon Gayther and Simon Knott!

The Gayther and Knott laboratories at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles are searching for a motivated Research Associate to develop and perform high-throughput functional genomic screens with the goal of elucidating how inherited and somatic genomic alterations affect cancer progression and drug response. The candidate will work alongside other wet lab and computational scientists to develop target lists for these screening efforts, construct corresponding CRISPR reagents, perform screens and then help plan and carry out follow up experiments to validate the screen hits and assign them mechanistic context. Candidates should be proficient with cell culture, virus production and infections, DNA and RNA extractions, PCRs and next generation sequencing library generation. Under general guidance, the RA III works closely with PI, providing technical and/or administrative support in large or multi-project-oriented labs. May be requested by PI to take on specific supervisory activities, and provide administrative leadership, and/or technical expertise. May develop hypothesis and assist in planning steps for the investigative process. Will review and remain current on literature as it relates to clinical/research study. Coordinates all lab and/or clinical activities, including but not limited to, budgetary/financial compliance, preparation of grant proposals, and creating independent presentations. Not responsible for generating grant funds.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Undertakes research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator or other designated investigators in the research team.

  • Assists in monitoring and ensuring compliance with safety standards and procedures

  • Assists with analyzing data and preparation of scientific findings for publication and presentations

  • Contributes to research discussion from other members of the research team

  • Implements and optimizes new laboratory methods under supervision of designated investigator

  • Abides by IRB proposals, Animal Licenses, and protocols relating to projects in the laboratory

  • May make independent presentations.

  • May provide system administration and maintenance for the local workstation network.

  • Leads and trains Research Lab Assistants, Research Fellow, lower level Research Associates, and other related support staff.

  • Orients new Research Fellows and/or Research Scientists to day-to-day lab operations and procedures.

Educational Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree required. Master of Science degree preferred.

Experience and Skillset:

  • Three to five (3-5) years of experience in area of research specialization.

  • Technical skills and expertise in specified areas of study including RNA, DNA and protein-related work, cell culture, and molecular biology (e.g. PCR, cloning) are required.

  • Expertise in computational analyses, animal modeling of disease or histology is preferred.

  • Ideal candidate will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent organization skills and be very detail oriented. The candidate should be self-motivated and able to multitask.

  • Able to work closely and effectively both within a team environment and also independently on specified projects.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for interaction with peers and other scientists in the research team as well as with the administrative team within the Center.

  • Required to have a good technical and theoretical understanding of Principal’s Investigators research objectives and the ability to research, develop and implement new laboratory procedures and protocols.

  • Experience in cell culture.

  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, PowerPoint).

  • Knowledge of human resource and administration policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of budgetary requirements and policies.

  • Experience in cutting-edge histology/imaging techniques including quantitative bright-field and fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, and electron microscopy is required.

  • Mastery of complex or unusual technical procedures and protocols.
