Cedars-Sinai Research Postdoctoral Scientist - Smidt Heart Institute - Dr. Susan Cheng Lab in Los Angeles, California

Institute is in search for a Research Postdoctoral Scientist who will lead and

assist with data management, analysis, and interpretation for Dr. Susan Cheng's

research projects. The position will help prepare original research manuscripts

and grant proposals. The Research Postdoctoral Scientist will develop, adapt,

and implement new research techniques and protocols. As well as perform

routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period.

The way we do biomedical

science is changing. Given that we can now measure millions of variables per

experiment, the next set of great discoveries will be made by researchers who

can efficiently sift through large volumes of data and rigorously glean

elemental truths. While methods in science are shifting, the fundamental

questions remain the same. Therefore, our research collaborative is seeking

extremely motivated team members who are clinically oriented and skilled at

conducting conventional and advanced statistical analyses of high-dimensional

datasets to address clear and relevant questions. In addition to a biomedical

understanding of age-related diseases, we are interested in candidates with

experience in critically appraising data analysis approaches. Our

inter-institutional collaborative applies high-throughput molecular and

image-based phenotyping methods in population cohorts to identify key drivers

of the balance between healthy aging and the risk for age-related diseases. Our

team includes clinicians, biostatisticians, bioinformaticians, epidemiologists,

imaging specialists, mass spectrometrists, analytical chemists, and basic

biologists -- all collectively focused on making discoveries that will

profoundly impact human health.

Interested candidates should ideally have expertise in analyzing

high-dimensional data including conducting predictive models in large clinical

datasets with prospectively adjudicated outcomes. The successful candidate will

work closely with a team of scientists to develop, test, and validate data

analysis methods intended to discover and confirm biomarker relations with

disease outcomes. All applicants should have exceptional written and oral

communication skills, as well as a strong publication history. The ideal

candidate is committed to pursuing a career in academia and will be able to leverage

our extremely strong track record in mentoring early career investigators

towards successfully obtaining independent federal grant funding and academic

faculty positions.

All candidates should be highly self-motivated, enthusiastic, and have a desire

to work as part of a dynamic and diverse collaborative team in a start-up like

environment. Candidates will also be willing to travel between bi-coastal

collaborative laboratories as needed.

  • Works independently with supervisionand consultation from the Principal Investigator and other researchscientists.

  • Leads and assists with datamanagement, analysis, and interpretation for a number of researchprojects.

  • Leads and contributes to the allaspects of a number of research projects, including the preparation oforiginal research manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals.

  • Develops, adapts, and implements newresearch techniques and protocols.

  • Assists with and trains in thepreparation of grant proposals (while not being responsible for thegenerating grant funds).

  • Candidate must be highly organizedand have precise attention to detail.

  • Excellent English oral and writtencommunication skills are required.

  • Candidate must be able to multitaskand assign priorities in a busy, start-up like environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills arerequired for working with a dynamic team.

  • Ability to demonstrateprofessionalism and respect for subjects’ rights and individual needs.


Educational Requirements:

  • Doctorate(MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in area directly related to field of researchspecialization.


  • Worksindependently on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI)within area of specialization.

  • Acquires thoroughtechnical and theoretical knowledge of research project and objectivesduring one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment.

  • Demonstrated aptitude to perform experimental protocols and procedures,including detailed data collection, and analysis and operation andmaintenance of specialized equipment.

  • Knowledge of safety standards andmaintenance of specialized equipment.

  • Strong track record of high impact publications.

  • Experience using R, STATA, and/or SAS for analyzingdatasets.

  • Direct experience analyzing large sized,high-dimensional datasets would be highly valued.

  • Experience with Python and working in Linuxenvironments would be valued.
