The Research Project Advisor works independently and in cooperation with the Principal Investigator(s) and researchers as well as the Research Operations Associate, Program Manager, Research Manager, and/or Associate Director in the cancer center’s research administration office to develop and implement research programs and initiatives, including project planning, identifying funding sources, preparing grant proposals (particularly multi-PI and multi-project grant proposals), and presenting results for possible publication. Attends national meetings and conferences, identifies collaborators and research sponsors, and maintains relationships with co-workers and National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other funding agencies. Ensures compliance with all federal and local agencies including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and local Institutional Review Board.

The Cedars-Sinai Cancer Research Project Advisor is the primary point person for assigned research program(s), initiatives, and research projects and is the liaison between the research program(s) and departments or research groups. The individual will work with the Cedars-Sinai Cancer leadership, researchers, administrators, committees, and external advisory board members to create and develop the research program(s), implement programmatic initiatives, foster inter- and intra-programmatic collaborations, develop inter-institutional collaborations, as well as support the planning and evaluation efforts of the program(s). As directed, this role assists in administrative functions for NCI designation and the Cedars-Sinai Cancer Research Administration Office. This includes providing support in the pre-and post-award administrative functions for NCI designation proposals and research program proposals with a particular focus on complex multi-program proposals. Applies a detailed knowledge of the areas of assigned responsibility, and a general knowledge of the institute functions and its interrelation with the larger Health System organization.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serves as departmental resource for scientific initiatives and major research projects and identifies funding opportunities.

  • Communicates the feasibility of study involvement and or participation with the PI.

  • Independently and as part of a team, develops and implements research programs, including project planning.

  • Prepares grant proposals and assists PI in authoring manuscripts for publication, books for publication; and prepares presentations for both professional and lay audiences.

  • Works closely with principal investigator and is knowledgeable in the area of research specialization.

  • Represents the interests of the department in inter-and intra-institutional research projects; provides knowledge for research collaborations.

  • Maintains excellent relationships with co-workers, locally, nationally, and internationally; has an excellent, positive relationship with NIH and other funding agencies.

  • Outstanding communication skills for interactions with faculty, administrators, and employees.

  • Special projects as assigned.

  • May function as bridge between laboratory, translational, and clinical research programs.

  • May be responsible for research process improvement, quality assurance, and problem solving for the department.

  • May develop curriculum and lead all aspects of coordination of small and large scientific symposia.

  • Maintains research practices using Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.

  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality according to HIPAA regulations and applicable law.

Department Specific Responsibilities:

  • Works independently and in coordination with Cedars-Sinai Cancer leadership, researchers, and administrators on preparing a variety of complex level grants/contracts that range from simple to high complex, including multi-project grants such as P30, P50, P01, U54, and DoD grants. These grants, contracts and awards may involve highly detailed budgets, multiple projects, cores and subawards, investigator-initiated trials, consortium and new center Dept of Defense (DoD) grants, and higher complexity foundation grants. For NCI designation submission, this may include sending communications and instructions to preparers/authors of specific components of the proposal, collecting and tracking of write-up submissions, collecting of biosketches and performing initial reviews of documents submitted.

  • Assists principal investigators (PIs) in overseeing all phases of a large portfolio of research grants and any subcontracts. Accountable for all aspects of post-award grant management and reporting.

  • Provides support and collaborates with Cedars-Sinai Cancer leadership, researchers and administrators in reviewing and editing various types of documents including but not limited to grants, proposals, contracts, manuscripts, abstracts, research protocols, and presentations. Utilizes knowledge of departmental, institutional and grant submission requirements to edit and accurately format various grant sections (e.g., equipment, facilities and resources, human subjects, vertebrate animals, resource sharing, etc.).

  • Identifies new research areas, funding source, and partners for collaboration, including multi-institutional collaborations. Works to create strategic alliances globally and broad-based support in order to influence important outcomes and gain collective agreement.

  • Designs, implements, and maintains project organization and communication plans to enable the research team to effectively work together to meet project objectives. Serves as a resource to partners and team members to ensure successful project or program outcomes.

  • Provides guidance to Cedars-Sinai Cancer leadership, program working groups, researchers, administrators, and/or committees on research collaboration opportunities. Supports efforts to foster collaboration and communication with other clinical and research programs in the institution and facilitate program team project proposals, grant submissions, and related communications.

  • Participates in the research and academic activities of the institute, planning, philanthropic development to support research efforts.

  • Coordinates and expedites flow of work. Initiates follow-up actions. Serves as resource to others on research programs and Cedars-Sinai Cancer procedures or in the resolution of moderate and complex problems or issues. Interacts with CS offices and department staff to facilitate communications and information exchange.

  • Composes and produces, as well as edits a variety of business correspondence, reports, presentations, confidential documents and/or forms, and related materials.

  • Helps prepare program metrics and trend reports to Cedars-Sinai Cancer leadership and administration on defined frequency or as requested (e.g. Cedars-Sinai Cancer membership, cancer-related list of publications, publication metrics, grants funding, etc.). Researches and gathers data for programmatic reports. Conducts preliminary analysis of data. Recommends report content and format to display findings most effectively.

  • Participates in required training and education programs.

  • Assists Cedars-Sinai Cancer leadership on other activities as assigned



  • Bachelors Degree, required.

  • Masters Degree, preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Certificate in Research Administration, preferred.


  • 10 years of experience in a research environment, required.
